Save the Earth

November22

Ok, so the other night I sat down to watch TBS Earth to America charity benefit for climate change and I was struck by a few biggies:

1. There are actually not that many funny people on tv any more (and, while we’re on the topic, why does every Tom and Katie joke get a good chuckle no matter how god awful the delivery)

2. Half of the ‘celebrity activists’ didn’t seem to have a clue what climate change is…couldn’t they send them an abbridged version of ‘climate change for dummies’ or something

3. That Robert Kennedy guy didn’t get any of the Kennedy looks or charisma (poor guy)

4. The organizers obviosuly forgot to send out an ‘appropriate dress’ memo to the audience since outfits ranged from Oscar worthy ensembles to jeans and a sweater

5. Who’s great idea was it to hold a climate change benefit in Las Vegas where concepts such as energy conservation are laughed at with the same contempt afforded to Celine Dion’s seventeenth ‘return to the stage’ concert

6. Why oh why were fully one third of the ads, comercials for SUV’s? I mean seriously, who do they think they’re kidding?

The Interview

November18

So the other day I went to Ottawa for a job interview. This interview went very well and, much to my suprise, the panel seemed to think that I have potential. Only one problem…although the position was advertised for now until the end of March, they want someone who will continue after that; probably as full time staff.

Yesterday I got a phone call from one of the panel members basically offering me the job as long as I am willing to move to Ottawa after March if the full time position can be funded. BUT if I do that then I’m basically giving up on the ongoing saga which is the 13 month hiring process doing my old job.

Job A (in Ottawa):
- doesn’t pay as well
- is in Ottawa
- doesn’t have much upward mobility

But:
- would involve a lot of responsibility
- I would be the boss of everything
- would be more satisfying in the short-term

Job B (13 month hiring process)
- is by no means assured (they might very well hire someone else)
- would be less interesing in the short-term
- is much more bureaucratic

BUT
- the pay would be better
- there are more opportunities for advancement
- could potentially be much more satisfying in the long-run

I have until Monday morning to decide and I think I’m going to take every second they’ve given me to sort this one out.

Eggnog

November15

The Holiday season is certainly upon us. Last night Bert was at the grocery store and what to his wondering eyes should appear but a carton of eggnog (but no tiny reindeer). Deciding that after years of not drinking eggnog, this year might be the year that I would be converted, last night I poured myself half a glass complete with rum (in the absence of brandy). It was ok but too sweet to have more than a couple of sips. The rest I put in the fridge for a later date.

This morning we awoke to the soft sound of falling snow, the first of the season. Although the weather is too warm for much accumulation above slush, the first snow truly does herald in the holiday spirit. Bert walked the dog in the snow this morning, soaking up the signs of winter. When he got back he decided that the dog should join in the fun and so dribbled some eggnog over the dogs food.

Meeka (the dog) didn’t seem to need much encouragement to enjoy the season though, I opened the back door and she tore out onto the deck, skidding in the wet snow and sliding into the fence. She carried this excitement back inside where she ran up and down the hallway dragging her rather sad looking rope toy behind her. She kept tripping over the trailing rope which was ever so cute.

Then I went to the fridge.

Then I noticed the glass of eggnog and rum

Then I noticed that it only had a tiny bit left in it

Then I asked Bert where he got the dogs eggnog from

Then he said he found it in a half-empty glass

Then we realized that we got our dog drunk…and before 9am!

Forced into action

November14

Ok, so a while back I told my old manager that if he was in a real bind I could volunteer a bit of time to help him out. Well he finally took me up on it and now I’m stuck helping someone who doesn’t want my help to draft a presentation. The main problem is that the distance between the summary she first sent and what we need for a final presentation is, well vast to say the least.

This woman is quite a bit older than me and in a substantially superior position so I have to sugar coat every critisism…in French. Honestly it will be a miracle if this works out. She doesn’t understand why her presentation isn’t good enough for this miscelaneous girl, I don’t understand why she cares enough to not just let me re-write it.

“Middle gorund…Hello…Where are you?” Oh yeah, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Yep that’s right, to make matters worse we have to do this whole thing virtually over the internet.

You know, somewhere between writing a six page long email and the simple phrase, “Oh just let me do it.” is the answer to my quandry. Somewhere between, “You suck.” and “Who the hell are you to critisize me.” is a cheesy, but beautiful, first meeting scene waiting to happen. Somewhere between my bad French and her bad French is something that resembles a complete and coherent sentence.

But where, oh where?
